Canon announced in a press release that this is the third time it has ranked first in the survey, and received high ratings for each criteria as well as “perfect scores for promotion of environmental management structure, resource recycling and measures against global warming”. Nikkei Inc started the survey in 1997 to assess business endeavours for the improvement of environmental measures and management efficiency, and this year’s questionnaire was sent to 1,733 companies, although only 396 answered.

The five criteria for assessment were: promotion of environmental management structure, pollution and biodiversity-related measures, resource recycling, environmental product policy and measures against global warming. Canon scored highly for “carbon offset program that reduces CO2 emissions equivalent to those produced by such products as office multifunction devices and some production printers to zero and the establishment of an automatic toner and ink cartridge recycling system”.

The company also scored “highly for other criteria, achieving a total score of 496 (out of a possible 500), placing first in the manufacturing category”. The OEM started its Action for Green environmental vision in 2008. and set a yearly goal for reducing lifecycle CO2 emissions for each product by three percent, also has energy-saving activities at its factories and reducing energy consumption during product use and remanufacturing, as well as a modal shift in distribution.

It concluded: “Canon’s Action for Green environmental vision aims to realise a society that promotes both enriched lifestyles and the global environment through technological innovation and improved management efficiency.”
