A useful interview setting out how best to find a programmer for your print business.
In a new interview with Jennifer Matt of WhatTheyThink, Web2Print Experts’ Chris Reisz-Hanson speaks about the challenges and misconceptions associated with finding a software developer.
Chris stresses that one of the most common misconceptions is not realising that creating software requires more than just a software programmer. He likens the process to building a house, arguing that you wouldn’t simply hire a carpenter and expect them to be able to provide adequate plumbing and wiring too. Software programming involves multiple roles and, according to Chris, if you don’t fill them all, you risk putting your programmer in a position to make all the decisions themselves, potentially leading to poor decisions being made. However, Chris goes on to add that it isn’t totally necessary to hire many different people, and advocates looking internally to identify people whose skills and experience can be used to aid the programmer.
During the interview, Jennifer asks for his advice on how printers with small software projects might recruit a freelance software developer. Chris responds that the most important trait to look for, particularly if working with just a single developer, is strong communication, saying that an okay programmer with good communication is better than a good programmer with mediocre communication.
