The OEM cartridge recycling programme has already collected over 60,000 cartridges in South Africa.
IT online reported that the programme in South Africa has taken off since the beginning of the year and Lexmark customers are able to contribute to an environmental initiative for the collection of printer cartridges.
Nathan Nayagar, Managing Director, Lexmark South Africa, said: “The programme has been running for the past year and has been a great success. This global initiative is one step closer to achieving a circular economy that will eventually minimise resource input, waste, emissions and energy leakage.”
On average 4,000 cartridges are collected by the OEM a month and they are 100 percent recyclable which is important as it can take 100s of years for decomposition to take place in landfills and as something like 37 million printer cartridges are thrown away annually the more that recycle the better for the environment.
Nayagar said that the growth rate of the programme was satisfying and that he believes that by making it easy to recycle is why it works: “All willing participants needs to do is sign in and register a Lexmark account, from there a special container will be delivered to our client’s offices that will store all types of empty Lexmark toner and ink cartridges. When it is full simply get hold us online via our app, or give us a call.”
